Neighbors Serving Neighbors in Need
Improving the lives of people in the community
VEAP is a basic needs and social services organization whose programs promote access to healthy foods, stable housing and transportation. VEAP’s programs are designed to address a particular need and when used together provide hope and can help avoid a financial crisis such as loss of housing, transportation or employment. Whether the hardship is from a disability, job transition, or the financial and physical stresses of aging, VEAP has been helping our neighbors in need for over 40 years.
Access to healthy foods
VEAP’s Healthy food policy commits VEAP to procuring and distributing healthy foods.
As one of the largest food pantries in the state, VEAP distributed 3.4 million pounds of food, 52% of which was fresh produce in 2016. VEAP places a high priority on offering healthy food options. VEAP had 106,358 visits to VEAP’s Food Pantry, NEAT classes, Summer Youth Food and Student Hunger Collaborative. In 2016, 6,107 weekend bags of food were distributed to local students through 13 schools and 2,927 youth received breakfast and lunch groceries during the summer.
Access to social services
VEAP social workers use a holistic lens and create a space of hope to support families from crisis to stability. In 2016, VEAP used $167,000 to support housing, utilities and car repairs for clients. While clients come to VEAP most frequently for food support, the new client assessments and emergency financial assessments administered by VEAP’s four licensed social workers uncover the underlying need, which most often goes beyond the need for food. VEAP helps people in a strengths-based approach to navigate all systems of support and address their critical needs.
Access to transportation
Volunteers provide transportation for low-income seniors to mostly medical appointments and rides home from VEAP’s food pantry. In 2016, volunteer drivers provided 8,707 rides for low-income seniors and 4,116 rides home from the food pantry.
Access to resources for children and youth
VEAP’s children and youth resources are designed to support positive childhood memories. Parents have access to kid-friendly food, school supplies, gifts, birthday and baby bags during times when they are faced with financial instability. In 2016, thousands of children accessed resources through VEAP.
