As the next chapter in post-pandemic life slowly unfolds, the state of Minnesota is lifting many protections for renters in our community. Here is what you can expect (download a PDF of this information by clicking here):
June 30, 2021: Your lease could be terminated if you materially violate its terms. That does not include non-payment of rent, but may include other reasons like improper use of property, health or safety violations, or other breaches to the lease agreement. Your landlord may start the eviction process if you qualify for rent assistance (through the state portal at www.renthelpmn.org) but refuse to apply.
August 13, 2021: Your lease could be terminated if you have not paid your rent and are not eligible for COVID-19 rental assistance.
September 12, 2021: You could be evicted if you have not paid your rent and are not eligible for COVID-19 rental assistance.
October 12, 2021: All lease termination and eviction protections are officially lifted except for eligible renters with pending COVID-19 rental assistance applications through the state online portal at www.renthelpmn.org
June 1, 2022: All lease termination and eviction protections are lifted.
It’s important to know your rights as a renter. Between now and October 13 of this year, property owners must give you a 15-day notice before they file an eviction because of non-payment.
There is help available if you are behind on your rent. RentHelpMN navigators from African Women and Youth Resource Center will be on-site at VEAP to assist community members with applying for rental assistance, offering support in English, Somali and Spanish. There will be up to three navigators at a time at VEAP, available Wednesdays and Fridays, 10 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. They will be offering walk-in service; however, if the navigators are busy only one person per navigator will be allowed to wait, all others will be instructed to leave and come back at another time. Please enter at Door 2 (staff and volunteer entrance) for this service.
