After a long and thorough search, VEAP is pleased to introduce our newest Social Services Director, Jessica Hering. Jessica joins our team with a diverse background of experience in leading, implementing and tracking successful social services programming, most recently for The Salvation Army. Learn more about her and why we’re so thrilled she has become part of Team VEAP…
Tell us a bit about where you were before VEAP and your past experience.
I have been working as a social worker for the past 14 years. Before coming to VEAP, I spent 10 years at The Salvation Army. During my time there, I was able to learn and serve in a number of different roles, including food pantry manager, supervisor and team lead for emergency financial assistance programs, manage seasonal activities such as holiday toy distributions and winter coat distributions, supervise on-site supportive housing and case management programs, participate in disaster relief programming, and provide oversight and management to grants and compliance. Prior to my time at The Salvation Army, I worked in an intake role for four years at a nonprofit outpatient sex offender program. I received my Bachelor’s of Social Work from the University of St. Thomas and Master’s of Social Work from the University of Minnesota.
Why this role and why VEAP?
As I contemplated making a job change after many years, the most important things I was looking for was an organization that was in touch and connected to their community and willing to be responsive and nimble when faced with changing needs. I really like the impact that VEAP has in the community and the way the organization is a leader and partner in serving the community and incorporating community members as volunteers. As the Social Services Director, my hope is to bring my knowledge and experience to complement this already fabulous team of professionals in the social services department.
What are you looking forward to digging into at VEAP?
It’s a very exciting time to start as we are rolling out the new COVID-19 Housing Assistance Program in partnership with Hennepin County and the State of Minnesota, and I look forward to quickly getting that housing assistance out to those in need in the community.
Any special talents you have or fun past-times?
Special talents include spending as much alone time as I can hibernating with a book or watching a TV show! But seriously, my favorite past-times are bike rides with my family, teaching my kids to downhill ski, and boating days on the lake.
