VEAP loves our volunteer corps of 3,000 people! In our Volunteer Spotlight series, we highlight their amazing work and dedication in advancing VEAP’s mission. In this spotlight, we interview Nancy Erickson.
When did you get involved with VEAP?
I got involved with VEAP in 2011. I was looking for a volunteer opportunity, I knew about VEAP, and had heard nothing but good things. I knew it was something that I’d like and I could do right away.
What volunteer roles do have with VEAP?
I’m in the warehouse sorting and bagging food donations. I’ve also stocked shelves. My favorite is the sorting and the bagging because I enjoy getting the food all nicely laid out and ready for our clients.
What keeps you volunteering with VEAP?
I’ve gotten to volunteer with the same group of people over the years – a lot of them since 2011. We’re really a community back there. Although there’s always newer people as well, several of us have been here all this time. VEAP makes you feel valuable and that really makes you want to come and help out.
What makes volunteering meaningful to you?
The need that’s out there. I always feel good when I’ve had a shift at VEAP because I know someone will benefit.
Is there a particular moment or favorite memory that stands out from volunteering?
Back in the days we had clients in the building, there was a client who came to me and wanted something so I told them that I’d go look back in the warehouse for them. I was able to find the item and give it to them, and a few weeks later that same client came back with a wrapped chocolate for me because they were so appreciative of my help. That was really nice of them to do.
What would someone be surprised to learn about you?
I’m in two book groups, but one of the groups that I’m in has been together – the same group – for 35 years. We pre-date Oprah!
What do you do when you aren’t volunteering?
In order to keep up with two book groups a month, I’m doing a lot of reading! I also like gardening, biking, going for walks, and playing with grandchildren. My grandchildren are four and six and love hide and seek!
What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering at VEAP?
I would say come on in and try the warehouse, be a shopper, or other roles! There’s so many things you can do and they’re all valuable.
Thank you, Nancy! If you’re interested in volunteering, please consider signing up for a shift today.
