Since the pandemic hit in March, VEAP’s team of housing specialists have been ramping up the reach and scope of our Rent Assistance program. Although Minnesota renters are still protected by Governor Walz’s eviction moratorium, their monthly rent payments are still piling up–placing many families in a precarious financial position once the order is lifted.
Experts predict that nearly 30,000,000 Americans are at risk of eviction come the end of September. In our own community, thousands have already reached out to VEAP in fear of losing their apartments. Many are being pressured by their property owners to make rent, even though protections remain in place and housing court has been put on pause. Fear and stress remain incredibly high.
VEAP is humbled to share that thanks to the generosity of both our donors and the cities of Bloomington, Richfield and Edina, we have issued an astounding $1,100,000 in rent assistance grants to struggling families and individuals. These funds do not have to be repaid, allowing renters some much-needed breathing room as they work to regain stability.
The rental grants are already having an impact on our recipients…
“Needing financial help is a hard thing not to feel embarrassed about (even though we’re living in the midst of a pandemic and most people need help), but she [VEAP’s housing specialist, Katrina] made it so painless and ended up feeling more like a friend than anything else. She was always so pleasant on the phone and over email, always spoke to me as an equal, and was so genuinely glad to help.
She and VEAP made such an incredible difference during this strange and challenging time. My life would look very different if it weren’t for your help, so please know that I am so very grateful. This is how our society should work. When people need help, they should be able to get it without guilt or shame or strings attached, so thank you for providing this assistance and providing it with kind hearts.
For me personally, it’s 100% changed how my life could have been in the wake of the last few months, which of course directly impacts my future. I honestly did not think I was worthy of this assistance, but VEAP didn’t hesitate to step in, doing way more than I could have anticipated. It has been such a huge relief, a giant weight lifted off of my shoulders. Again, I am so grateful. Thank you. Thank you.”
VEAP will continue to provide this greatly needed assistance to renters in our community. If you feel compelled to support this work, please consider making a donation today. Thank you!
