The Board of Advisors for Franciscan Retreats and Spirituality Center awards VEAP (Volunteers Enlisted to Assist People) with the Franciscan International Award. The Franciscan International Award honors men, women and organizations who symbolize the spirit and apostolic zeal of St. Francis of Assisi. VEAP is the 59th recipient of this award and will be honored at the Franciscan International Award Dinner on Thursday, May 11, 2017 at the Wilds Golf Club in Prior Lake.
Father Richard Kaley of St. Bonaventure Catholic Church nominated VEAP for its work meeting basic needs and providing social services for low-income residents in Bloomington, Richfield, Edina and south Minneapolis. In 2016, VEAP distributed 3.4 million pounds of food, 52% of which was fresh produce. VEAP programs provide resources and hope while moving families toward economic sustainability.
Previous recipients of the Franciscan International Award include Dr. Billy Graham (1972), Dr. Mildred Jefferson (1978), Habitat for Humanity (1999), Sister Helen Prejean (2003) and Fran Heitzman (2014).
