VEAP loves our volunteer corps of 3,000 people! In our Volunteer Spotlight series, we highlight their amazing work and dedication in advancing VEAP’s mission.
When did you get involved with VEAP?
Heidi: My parents came to VEAP for a tour and a group volunteer activity with their church, Mt. Olivet and at the same time Carter and I were looking for a place to volunteer together. My parents told me about VEAP and I thought it sounded like a great place for us to try out. I looked at your website, talked it over with Carter and we signed up in December 2018.
What volunteer roles do have with VEAP?
Heidi: We volunteer in the warehouse sorting produce and food donations on Thursday evenings.
What keeps you volunteering with VEAP?
Carter: It feels good to help people. I like helping other people.
Heidi: I like the feeling of giving back to the community. I work in the mental health field and a lot of people I work with as clients use food pantries; I want to give back because I am really fortunate in my life. I have a home and I have food on the table.
Is there a particular moment or favorite memory that stands out from volunteering?
Heidi: We loved the volunteer appreciation week food- the donuts and the wraps were great!
Carter: I really loved the donuts!
What might someone be surprised to learn about you?
Heidi: We have a hedgehog named Pixie Banana Pants at home. We’ve had her for almost 2 years, we got her from a breeder in South Dakota. She is nocturnal and not that social; she stays in the spare bedroom because her room has to be between 75 and 82 degrees. We also have a dog, Bella and 2 cats, Asia and Pika. They’re our zoo!
Carter: I’m funny and I’m a goofball. I like to watch YouTube and watch people play video games.
What do you do when you aren’t volunteering?
Heidi: I am a Doctoral student in Counselor Education Supervision. I like to watch TV and I love to read whenever I have a chance. I read everything!
Carter: I like to watch YouTube and watch people play video games.
What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering at VEAP?
Carter: Do it! It’s fun.
Heidi: It’s a great organization with a lot of opportunities to help the community. I haven’t met one person that hasn’t been nice. Everyone is really helpful and friendly.
Thank you Heidi and Carter!
