Volunteers like Kathy, profiled here, continue to amaze us with their flexibility, commitment and focus on ensuring we can serve people in our community with food during this crisis. We are actively practicing social distancing in our facility and if you are healthy & willing, we could use your help. We are specifically looking for volunteers to assist filling visitor orders in the pantry and volunteer van drivers to make home deliveries. Get started today!
When did you get involved with VEAP? What attracted you?
I started volunteering in February 2020. I had time on my hands. I have always been a stay-at-home mother and I wanted to stay busy now that our last child has gone off to college. My husband isn’t ready to retire just yet. I hope to get him volunteering with me at VEAP at that time.
What volunteer roles do have with VEAP? What is your favorite?
I like the warehouse work in “food rescue,” salvaging all the donated food possible while verifying the safety of the food. Food waste is really distressing for me, so this is a great way to get healthy food to those who need it. I also really like the client interaction of leading them from the lobby into the shopping area. I enjoy bagging the groceries and chatting with the clients in the distribution area.
What keeps you volunteering with VEAP?
I like meeting other volunteers, seeing the gratitude of the clients, knowing that I am doing my part to reduce food waste and see that children don’t go hungry.
What might someone be surprised to learn about you?
People might be surprised to know that I am the oldest of 11! My husband is one of 10, and we have 8 children and 8 grandsons. We have 69 nieces and nephews, and over 75 great nieces and nephews.
What do you do when you aren’t volunteering?
I work as a part-time nanny for two families during the week and like walking in Hyland whenever the weather is nice.
What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering at VEAP?
I would tell a potential volunteer to come in and give it a try. You can work as much or as little as you want to. It’s easy to pick up a shift if you have an open day or to cancel if needed is just as easy. You just go online and look to see what is needed daily.
