VEAP loves our volunteer corps of 3,000 people! In our Volunteer Spotlight series, we highlight their amazing work and dedication in advancing VEAP’s mission.
When did you get involved with VEAP? What attracted you?
I had heard of VEAP but I didn’t know that much about your programs or services. My church collects food donations regularly and several woman there spoke very highly of VEAP. They encouraged me to reach out and volunteer, I’m so glad I did.
What volunteer roles do have with VEAP?
I volunteer in the distribution area as a service assistant. I started out one morning a week and I’ve recently added a second day.
What keeps you volunteering with VEAP? Is there a particular moment or favorite memory that stands out from volunteering?
I love to talk with people. I’m a smiler. People sometimes come in looking very down and I always give them a smile and usually I get a smile back. One gentleman came in and he looked very sad, I smiled at him and asked, “How are you doing?” He said, “My day didn’t start off very well but when I saw your smile it got better.” If I can do that for even one person, I am happy.
What might someone be surprised to learn about you?
I have a large owl collection that I keep out year round. I trim my Christmas tree with owls, I have 52 ornaments! I just love owls and I always have since I was a little girl.
What do you do when you aren’t volunteering?
I am real active in my church. Mt. Calvary Lutheran and I attend a bible study one day a week. I connect with friends from my former job at Lake Shore Drive. I worked there for 31 years and for the last 10 years I was activities director. I also have 5 kids and 4 grandkids.
What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering at VEAP?
I tell people all the time about VEAP and encourage them to volunteer! I tell them, “You’d never believe how rewarding it is until you actually do it!” I love it here and I can’t imagine not volunteering at VEAP.
Thank you, Nancy!
