VEAP loves our volunteer corps of 3,000 people! In our Volunteer Spotlight series, we highlight their amazing work and dedication in advancing VEAP’s mission.
When did you get involved with VEAP? What attracted you?
December 2017 I started volunteering with VEAP. I was familiar with VEAP already because I was the administrator for Bloomington Housing and Redevelopment Authority. I was looking for something very flexible because I like to travel to a lot.
What volunteer roles do have with VEAP? What is your favorite?
Lobby Intake. I like the clientele. I enjoy talking with people and having conversations with our clients.
What keeps you volunteering with VEAP?
Having come out of a sector where you deal with social services, you know that nonprofits are so valuable and they are often so dependent on volunteers. Now that I have the time, I like being able to give something back.
Is there a particular moment or favorite memory that stands out from volunteering?
How appreciative people are and that’s nice. Particularly if they are having a very difficult time in life and we’re here for them. That’s really an incredible thing.
What might someone be surprised to learn about you?
I’m an avid traveler. My favorite place to travel is India. It’s colorful; the culture is so different than here, and I’ve really learned a lot. There are some amazing sites.
What do you do when you aren’t volunteering?
I enjoy traveling. I have 2 Labrador Retrievers; they keep me busy… and spending time with friends.
What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering at VEAP?
That you’ll meet a lot of nice people. It works well if you need a flexible schedule. And with food, you see the benefit right away. You know that you are meeting a real need.
