VEAP loves our volunteer corps of 3,500 people! In our Volunteer Spotlight series, we highlight their amazing work and dedication in advancing VEAP’s mission.
When did you get involved with VEAP?
I began volunteering in March 2014. My church, House of Prayer Lutheran Church in Richfield, has actively supported VEAP for years so I was familiar with it. I’ve always liked that VEAP assists those in the local communities and people in my neighborhood.
What volunteer roles do have with VEAP? What is your favorite?
I have worked almost totally in distribution: originally by “counting” and bagging groceries for shoppers, working at the Exit area, weighing carts before they leave, and keeping “aisle three” flowing smoothly. I also used to work with a team of women who prepared for the Gala and other evening events held outside our facility. Since March, when we moved to the current version of serving our clients, I work outside and either register clients as they drive up or take their orders. I enjoy interacting with our clients and I especially enjoy taking orders. I’ve been studying Spanish for two years on Duo Lingo (computer) to improve my “high school” knowledge so now I get to practice my Spanish and improve it at the same time!
What keeps you volunteering with VEAP?
The staff at VEAP is so positive and appreciative of the volunteers — I feel guilty if I miss a shift for some reason! Our clients are so grateful for what they can get here and the volunteers are so dedicated and conscientious. I encourage all my friends to come join us!
What might someone be surprised to learn about you?
Although I was born and raised in Bloomington, I lived in Germany for 8-1/2 years — and my two boys (now in their 40s) were both born there — at an American Army hospital. It was a wonderful experience we truly enjoyed, but we returned to the States in 1985, and I’ve been in the Twin Cities ever since.
What do you do when you aren’t volunteering?
This summer I’ve been going to my lake home every week from Thursday through Sunday. I enjoy the outdoors and I have gardens to tend, and a sister to laugh with! I come back each week to volunteer at VEAP on Monday and Wednesday. I also enjoy working out at my health club, and I was active with my church until volunteer activities closed down with COVID.
What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering at VEAP?
Come join us! You can choose your days and your shifts, and there are lots of areas where help is needed. I haven’t (thus far) worked in the office, but it’s something I’ve considered when my gardens are done at the lake!
Thank you, Terri!
