New Friday Distribution Model
Changes to VEAP Appointments – Starting November 1
Beginning November 1, VEAP will be updating our food distribution model to better meet growing community needs and ensure equitable access for all participants.
What’s Changing
- Participants will now receive one appointment per month. Previously, some households were scheduled for two visits, but due to increasing demand, only about 50% were receiving a second appointment. Moving to one appointment per month for everyone ensures a fair and consistent experience for all.
- A new supplemental food option will be available every Friday from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Door 4. This will be a drive-up only distribution, offering a pre-packed box of fresh and shelf-stable items via a ticket/voucher system.
Additional Food Access Options Still Available
- Mobile Pantry: VEAP’s public Mobile Pantry sites remain open to all community members.
- Express Service (Mon–Thurs): A grab-and-go bag of non-perishable food, plus additional produce, is available at Door 4 without an appointment.
- Home Delivery: For households facing transportation or mobility challenges, groceries can be delivered directly to their home.
Why These Changes Are Being Made
With food insecurity on the rise, these updates are designed to expand access and reduce wait times. Offering one appointment per household ensures equal opportunity to receive food, while the new Friday distribution adds a low-barrier option for those needing additional support. This model will also allow VEAP to serve more families more efficiently.
Impact on Friday Staffing and Volunteer Shifts
These operational changes mean a new Friday rhythm at VEAP:
- Second and Third Pantry Shifts on Fridays will be closed.
- New First Shift Volunteer Pantry Roles have been added to support the Friday morning distribution.
- Home Deliveries will still take place from 9:00 AM to 11:30 AM.
- The Dar Al Farooq Mobile Pantry will continue as scheduled.
- We are still accepting donations from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
- VEAP will close to the public at noon on Fridays. This means there will be no express service, home deliveries, phone intake, donation drop-offs, or other volunteer activities after 12:00 PM.

Frequently Asked Questions
We’ll be sharing information with participants through several direct and thoughtful channels. Starting now, when individuals call to schedule an appointment, our intake team will inform them of the upcoming changes, which take effect on November 1, 2025.
To ensure a smooth transition and avoid overwhelming the system while we refine the new process, we are holding off on broader public communication until early 2026. At that point, we will update all digital resources and provide clear signage in the building, printed materials, social media, and staff support to help guide participants through the new system.
As always, our priority is making sure everyone feels informed, supported, and prepared; no one will be left wondering what to do.
We understand that not all participants will be willing or able to visit VEAP Monday – Thursday for an in-pantry shopping experience. Our team does allow participants to designate a “proxy” to visit the pantry on their behalf; however, we do require the participant sign a document allowing express permission. Please connect with our Social Services team to learn more about this option: socialservices@veap.org
VEAP’s ability to offer culturally-specific food is generally tied to our current funding sources and product availability. We cannot guarantee access to these types of food but always try our best to source food items our participants will use and enjoy. While Friday boxes may vary from week to week, fortunately, fresh produce and items like rice or pasta or beans (which are likely to be included) are broadly culturally-flexible.
While Fridays may be the best fit for some, it’s important to remember that participants will still have access to Friday morning food deliveries (a full appointment’s worth of food), as well as other flexible options, like the mobile pantry and express service. Sharing these alternatives can be a big comfort to the people we serve.
Talking Points
Below you will find potential questions participants may pose to you as a volunteer, and answers with key talking points you may use. Please remember:
- Acknowledge first (“I understand this feels hard…”) before explaining.
- Keep language consistent: fairness, flexibility, more options.
- Always point to other choices: Friday Boxes, Express Service, Mobile Pantry sites, and Home Delivery.
- Stay kind and calm: changes are tough, but compassion matters.
“We understand it may feel like less. Each monthly appointment gives a full selection of groceries, plus you can:
- Receive a express services Monday – Thursday without an appointment at Door 4
- Visit a Mobile Pantry site
- Come on a Friday for a pre-packed box of shelf-stable items and produce
- Ask about Home Delivery if transportation or mobility is difficult.
These options together are meant to make sure your household has enough support.”
“No problem — you still have your monthly appointment. We can also provide you with an Express Pack of food at Door 4 Monday through Thursday at any time during business hours, no appointment needed. You can also check our Mobile Pantry schedule to see if one of the community sites works better for your schedule. We have sites available on Saturdays. And if it’s hard to get out at all, you may qualify for Home Delivery.”
“Each Friday Box includes a mix of:
- Perishable items (like fresh produce, deli items, or dairy when available)
- Shelf-stable pantry staples (such as rice, pasta, or canned goods)
- Surplus or seasonal extras (depending on what donations we have that week)
Boxes are designed to supplement your monthly pantry visit and provide fresh, healthy options.”
“A Friday box is meant to supplement your monthly appointment. To help meet your needs, you can also visit our Mobile Pantry sites and/or receive Express Service during the week at Door 4. Together, these options are designed to stretch your household’s food supply.”
“We really value you as part of VEAP. This change wasn’t easy, but it’s about fairness: making sure long-time visitors and new families all have the same access. And remember, we’ve added more flexible choices with our Friday boxes, while still preserving our Mobile Pantry, Express Service, and Home Delivery.”
