When did you get involved with VEAP?
I talked with a friend and she said VEAP is a good place to meet people and to practice English. I started volunteering in January 2015.
What volunteer roles do have with VEAP? What is your favorite?
I’ve volunteered in a few areas: Lobby Intake, Data Entry, Distribution and Phone Intake. I love Lobby Intake the most because I really enjoy interacting with people face to face and seeing them smile. It is nice to see people feel some relief from hard times.
What keeps you volunteering with VEAP?
I love helping people and I enjoy seeing people smile. I like helping people in the Latino community and help them to feel confident by talking with me in Spanish. They feel good knowing they have an appointment for next time.
Is there a particular moment or favorite memory that stands out from volunteering?
I really like when children come in and get a Birthday Bag. It makes me so happy to see them smile and excited.
What might someone be surprised to learn about you?
I have a lot of perseverance. I enjoy motivating people to follow their dreams. I love encouraging people to try.
What do you do when you aren’t volunteering?
I work full-time in the bakery at Sam’s Club as a cake decorator. I enjoy working out 3-4 times a week. I joined a Toastmaster Club to improve my public speaking and I volunteer for Prepare + Prosper as a tax preparer. I will volunteer here at VEAP with Prepare + Prosper during the tax season; I’ve volunteered with them before at Community Action Partnership and at CLUES.
What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering at VEAP?
It is a good place to be and a great way to get to know people.
Is there anything else you’d like to share?
It has been a good experience, I’ve learned a lot and enjoyed making new friends here. I’ve also learned a lot about my community by being here.
